The following comes from the Heart Mind Institute. Can you relate to any of the following?
You know you're doing the work -- but you still feel off, anxious or disconnected?
You've undertaken various therapies and modes of self-care -- but you still struggle with a nervous system wired for hypervigilance, self-doubt or emotional disconnection?
You've gained insights along the way -- but your body hasn't caught up with your mind or heart?
You intellectually know you are worthy of love -- but you still feel emotionally unworthy or undeserving?
You tell yourself you're safe -- but still feel a deep sense of unease in your body?
Emotions feel overwhelming or out of reach?
You second-guess yourself -- what you said, what you did, what people think of you?
You're stuck in unhealthy relationship cycles -- caught in a loop of longing or avoiding -- vulnerability feels risky?
You're on edge; your nervous system is wired for hypervigilance, scanning for rejection, abandonment or betrayal?
No matter how may people are around you, you carry a sense of deep loneliness that never quite fades?
Did you know .....
There is nothing wrong with you -- these ways of being are what you learned to do in order to survive -- and they can be healed!
Changes in the brain are nestled in changes in the nervous system and in the body.
You may not think you have experienced emotional trauma, but YOUR BODY MAY BE TELLING A DIFFERENT STORY.
Chronic tension, headaches, digestive issues, or unexplained pain are signals that your body may be holding onto unresolved trauma or emotional wounds.
To heal from trauma involves more than mental processes -- it requires an "embodied awareness" of safety, which is a somatic (felt) process -- not a mental one!

The roots of emotional wounds and trauma
Leaders in the mental health field indicate we have ALL experienced some form of emotional wounding and trauma.
Emotional trauma is now understood to be ANY event where we didn't have the resources at the time, that we needed to cope with an experience. This is common for all of us in childhood and does NOT necessarily imply abuse or neglect. (See Stress, Trauma and Disease tab above).
In that moment of helplessness, we are left in a state of SHOCK (emotionally abandoned, betrayed, rejected) which leaves an energetic imprint of OVERWHELM on the nervous system.
As we grow up it shows up mentally and emotionally as people-pleasing, hypervigilance, perfectionism, etc. These are subconscious attempts to keep ourselves safe.
Coping skills, essential for survival in childhood, start holding us back from living our best life.
According to Poly Vagal Theory, emotional trauma imprints on our Vagas Nerve and results in nervous system dysregulation. When the nervous system is dysregulated, the body can't fully heal (physically, mentally, or emotionally).
A dysregulated nervous system also contributes to your body, and mind, living in survival mode (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) which:
creates havoc in your body and an environment where disease can thrive due to the ongoing release of stress hormones (adrenalin, cortisol, etc.) aka Sympathetic Dominance. Think of it like the "pot is always on simmer" which contributes to chronic inflammation in the body and zaps you of your lifeforce energy!
hinders your body's ability to access and remain in the Parasympathetic state, which is when your body RESTS, DIGESTS, FILTERS, DETOXIFIES, and HEALS.
No matter how much you detox, eat clean, supplement, exercise, etc., healing fully happens when your nervous system is in a regulated state.
scientific research in recent decades has clearly shown there is a direct dose/response relationship between unresolved childhood trauma (see ACEs Study) and the incidence of autoimmune disease.
Living in survival mode also leaves your subconscious mind running your life behind the scenes.
Self-sabotage is an example of this, especially for things that matter to us deeply -- but we can't seem to move forward on consistently. This is when you know what to do -- but you don't do it. And then you wonder "why do I do that"? It's like one foot is on the gas pedal and the other is on the brakes.
"STUCKNESS" = THE SILENT DREAM KILLER
Unresolved emotional trauma is often at the core of our pain and suffering. "Energetically" it shows up in our health, relationships, finances, vocation and the pursuit of our heart's passions and desires
Stress and unresolved emotional trauma require different approaches.
Although conventional mental health approaches are extremely helpful with the cognitive aspects (awareness of patterns of behavior, limiting beliefs, etc.), it simply lacks the ability to address the impact of chronic stress and emotional trauma on the nervous system. They require somatic (body-based) approaches to restore healing within the nervous system. Somatic approaches are integrated into the healing modalities which I use.

The good news is you don't have to remember what happened, or relive a past experience, to heal from it.
I use "MUSCLE RESPONSE TESTING" as a means to communicate with your subconscious mind to identify the emotional wounds that hold you back which are now ready to be released and healed!
You are an active participant in the treatment process. You will experience evidence of shifts in your body in real time!
